From dust to drench: A recent room makeover in a beautiful Victorian home in Worcester.

COLOUR  DRENCHING

Colour drenching is painting everything the same colour. This trend is on the rise and going nowhere according to Instagram and Pinterest. Not only does it look great, but it also makes your room feel bigger, lighter, and cosier by blurring the lines between each surface.

In this room, at the front of a Victorian property in Worcester with a high ceiling, original features, and superb views, we opted for three complimentary ‘sky blue’ finishes. Collaborating with the client, we chose a diamond eggshell for the walls, shelving, and cabinets. Then, a vinyl matte for the ceiling and coving and finally, satin for the skirting boards, architrave, and PVC windows. Yes, you can paint PVC!

Using three finishes of the same colour creates subtle changes, accentuated by the natural light beaming in through the bay window, amplifying the airier feel and the room’s high-end aesthetic.

VENETIAN PLASTER

Plans inevitably change due to unforeseen problems, often when working on older, period properties. Here, the client wanted me to construct a large, boxy fireplace. An all-in-one structure containing the sides and mantle, scaled to complement the room’s high ceilings.

Originally, the client wanted to tile the entire fireplace surface without cutting tiles. But, the dimensions and width of the chimney breast made this an impossibility. So, we had to change our approach and explore alternatives.

With a background in plastering, I suggested Venetian Plaster. This pre-mixed and coloured lime plaster contains crushed marble and gives a glass-like stone finish.

It’s a bold finish, typically used for feature walls. But I understood the client’s aesthetic and thought they would go for it! Applying Venetian Plaster to this three-dimensional fireplace required a unique approach. But I think the results speak for themselves.

COMPLETE RENOVATION

Achieving the result pictured here required an extensive renovation of the room. A mock-victorian fireplace and gas fire were removed alongside a tiled hearth. A concrete base was poured into a mould to create a base for the new hearth, and the fireplace was constructed. The walls were stripped back to the original render, where new wiring spurs for the cabinets and Samsung Frame TV were installed before being sealed and stabilised for plastering.

After two coats of plaster, the original ceiling and coving were restored. Although carpentry is not our primary focus, we built two cabinets and floating shelves into each alcove, meeting the client's request.

New skirting boards were scribed and installed alongside new sockets, switches, and door and window furniture. The door was restored, waxed, and rehung. This room showcases a range of my skills. Skills I’m excited to apply to your next project.
